The city of San Mateo lies on the Western shore of San Francisco Bay. Due to it being enclosed from ocean winds and fog, the city experiences a mild nautical climate.

San Mateo was initially inhabited by Ohlone Indians.

The San Mateo Japanese Garden

The Garden is located in Central Park. It is small in size but jam-packed with all the traditional elements that are commonly found within a Japanese garden. Designed in 1966 by Nagao Sakurai, a renowned landscape architect, the Garden has the following features:

• Cherry trees
• Koi pad
• Bamboo groove
• Japanese maple trees
• Shrines
• Mini waterfalls and more

Sawyer Camp Trail

Probably the most recognized length of the trail, the Sawyer Camp trail extends from Hillcrest Blvd. It is the most commonly known and used trail than all others in the Country Park system.

CuriOdyssey

The CuriOdyssey is a science museum as well as a zoo for children and families. In this Museum/Zoo, visitors get to see wildlife up and close. Visitors can also enjoy playing with kid-friendly science exhibits. The museum houses nearly 100 rescued animals that cannot survive all alone in the wild. It also has a science playground where children play with all kinds of science wonders.

Seal Point Park

This park has many different paths for walking, cycling, a dog park and bird watching. You can observe wildlife like the California Clapper Rail while walking the boardwalk.
