Today’s song of the day is a British rock & roll classic, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” by legendary rock group The Police.
Fun Facts
- “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” was the second track on the Police’s multi-platinum 1981 album, “Ghost in the Machine”
- The Police have historically been comprised of three core band members – lead vocalist and bass guitarist Sting, guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland. Jean Roussel collaborated with the band on the track as a pianist, synthesizer and arranger.
- Although the song was released in 1981, it was written by Sting as an acoustic ballad back in 1976 while the band was known as “Strontium 90” and included bassist Mike Howlett.
- Sting flew Jean Roussel to the group’s recording studio in Montserrat to re-record the song with piano parts included, against the wishes of bandmates Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland.
- The song reached as high a No. 3 on the US Billboards chart, behind Olivia Newton-John’s “Let’s Get Physical” and Foreigner’s “Waiting for a Girl Like You”
- The song lyrics offer a fictional account of an affair between a female student and a male teacher that is ultimately discovered by fellow students and staff, which has sparked suspicions of the song being autobiographical given Sting’s previous teaching career.
- Following the release of “Ghost in the Machine,” the members of The Police pursued their own solo projects. However, tensions between Sting and other members would soon create a rift within the band, and their follow-up album, 1983’s “Synchronicity,” would ultimately prove to be their last.
Lyrics
Though I’ve tried before to tell her
Of the feelings I have for her in my heart
Every time that I come near her
I just lose my nerve as I’ve done from the start
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met?
It’s a big enough umbrella
But it’s always me that ends up getting wet
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
I resolved to call her up
A thousand times a day
And ask her if she’ll marry me
Some old-fashioned way
But my silent fears have gripped me
Long before I reach the phone
Long before my tongue has tripped me
Must I always be alone
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on
On and on and on and
Every little thing, every little thing
Every little thing, every little thing
Every little, every little, every little
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Every little thing she does
Thing she does is magic
E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh
E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh E-oh
Every little thing, every little thing
Every little thing she do is magic, magic, magic
Magic, magic, magic
Oh oh, Oh oh
E-oh oh oh oh oh
I have to tell a story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met
It’s a big enough umbrella
But it’s always me that ends up getting wet
